I just put up producer Conor Bezane’s package on Leslie Feist, known to many for her contribution to Broken Social Scene. Click the image to check it out - I think it’s definitely worth watching, and if you are a fan of Patrick Daughters we’ve also included several of his videos. His collaboration with Feist on “1234″ is pretty amazing (see fans gush) - the entire video was shot in a single take.
If you like what you see, you might want to give a listen to her third and latest album, The Reminder.
It still amazes me how the internet, specifically within the last few years, gives so many voices the opportunity to be heard - at once. What would take days to compile, happened today - literally - in seconds.
MTV News has already collected several sources online where students have been posting first hand accounts of the shooting. Within minutes, blog entries were up, photos were posted. Citizen/Collective journalism was furiously in effect today.
What amazes me even more, is how it’s possible that the shootings began at 7AM, and somehow this disturbed individual began shooting again several hours later, in another location on campus. How were the students not sufficiently warned? What happened?
Virginia Tech students told MTV News they have learned that the first shooting occurred at a residence hall and involved either the girlfriend of the shooter or her roommate, as well as a Resident Assistant. CNN reports that the campus-wide alert wasn’t made until two hours later, when the second shooting began to occur at Norris Hall. The police claim they thought the dorm incident was an isolated matter.
… I wonder if things would have turned out the same way if some sort of student body emergency-only mass text service had been in effect. Everyone with a cell phone (and text service) would have seen the message, been given instructions, and who knows? Maybe less damage would have been done.
A lot of lessons to learn from this. A lot to think about. Working on covering this has consumed my (and all my coworkers) entire day, and now I just want to go home and watch Little Rascals. Or bury my head underneath my pillow. Maybe I’ll do both. This is definitely not over and tomorrow I am sure is not going to be any easier. I cannot imagine how the students must feel.
Happy Monday!
I just finished watching a rough cut of my bilingual bands package. In the talented hands of Lee and Tami, I am confident that it’s going to come out great. Along with live performance clips and excerpts from their latest music videos, it will include exclusive interviews with Los Abandoned, Kinky, and Pacha Massive.
Be sure to check it out on MTV/MTVU/MTV2/MTV TR3S, etc. this Wednesday, 3/21! I will most likely be handling the digital production of this as well so drop by either Wednesday 3/21 or Thursday 3/22 to mtvnews.com for extra bilingual bands goodness.
After it airs I can give you the lowdown on how it all came together.
…In non work related news, this past weekend I saw 300. It was the most brainless, awesome, homoerotic testosterone-fest. It made Braveheart look like a tea dance. …I also predict there will be a lot of Spartan costumes at this year’s Halloween parade in the Village. Can’t wait!
MTV News Honors Biggie

This week MTV News will be rolling out 4 packages on Biggie, in honor of the ten year anniversary of his death. In this week’s Mixtape Monday you can read a review/info about The Best of Biggie: 10th Anniversary Mixtape.
A comp show will start living in Overdrive beginning this evening with the first package, that you can go back to all week to catch all four updates. Stay tuned, should be interesting.

A big “Thank You!” to La Bloga for giving my music video a shout out today.
…It is raining like crazy here in NYC, which always makes me feel a little blue. Plus if you think dead rain worms smell great in the streets, imagine what they smell like within the confines of a tomb-like subway car. Yum.

1. Create a Mobile Searchable Database of PDFs!
“…All you need to do is email your PDF to pdf2txt@adobe.com and they will send the full text of the PDF back within minutes. These files can be searched from within Gmail. Then set up a filter from the Adobe address (noreply@adobe.com) and have the messages archived and automatically labeled. Now you have a searchable database for your PDFs - oh and it’s fully accessible via a mobile too.” - via micropersuasion

“Our aim is to create the best recruitment site for the industry keeping it simple, effective and most importantly fun. This is reflected in our tag line “work in new media”. It should be as simple as that.”
…I’m not currently looking for a different gig however I do subscribe to their blog listing of available positions - I like to see what’s floating around out there.
6. My coworker Andrew has a band.
He is super cute, and the two demos on his myspace page are pretty rockin. Enjoy.(Andrew, when are we going to Wii it up???)
7. MTV News Webcam Correspondent
Matt Sunbulli, my coworker and fellow vlog lover, recently posted a comical upate on the Broadband Emmy Awards.
…His MySpace page needs a serious makeover but he makes up for that with interesting blog entries. You can bookmark this, and come back to check out his weekly dispatches. They just keep getting better!
… I was going to wrap it up here, but since I still have some free time left I will bid you adieu with a mini rant.
Sometimes Vox Makes me Feel Stupid
As far as my social networking history goes, here is a brief timeline:
diaryland - livejournal - friendster - myspace - flickr - vox
I’ve probably created accounts with most major social networking sites, but these are the six that I have actually been active in, or, at least lurk around in from time to time.
I recently started exploring Vox, after signing up a few months ago. This week I started importing my blog entries from wordpress (a nice feature), but then realized to my dismay that they generate their own vox rss feed for you, and you can’t tweak your page code to change that. In fact, as far as I can tell, you can’t modify your code at all! Lame!
Sure, they provide you with all these pretty layout templates. But what if I hate them all, which I do? I don’t have time to create a new one, I just want to pimp out an existing one. Specifically, I want to include an rss icon that points to THIS page, with the feedburner link from this page, but I can’t.
If someone knows how to tamper with Vox layouts, please help. Also, if you know a way for my to write in one blog that I can automatically import into all my social networking site accounts, I will make you a personalized video thank you and post it here.
You probably thought I was going to say I will buy you a margarita, but no. That’s Julia’s job.
Blast from the Past #1: Amiga
I miss my old & dear friend Jessicah Pratt. (on the right)

Her first short film was featured in my film festival in 2002, and she is moving to LA in a few weeks to start her new life as an LA film student/fashionista.
…P-Ratt, remember when we would watch all the strange movies I would find through my greencine account? Remember Elling?
Safe travels…
Blast from the Past #2: Pelo Nostalgia

… I miss my old hair.
I love Nylon Magazine!
I don’t know what I love more - the fact that I can get entire issues online for free in a cool flippity format or the fact that they now have an online video channel.
…Unfortunately, the quality of their videos is sadly, quite crappy. And it doesn’t matter how great your content is if people can barely stand watching it.
Here are some examples of magazines doing the online video thing a tad (ok, a lot) better for my already over used peepers:
But to be fair, I also found a magazine with an even worse offering of video - Seventeen. It looks like they haven’t updated their video extras area since 2005. How do I know this? Because I worked on the MTV reality show ”Miss Seventeen” and that is the only content that is living there (as of today). Woops! I wonder how many teen girls even bother to visit the site in the first place. It seems pretty dead.
I AM ESCAPING MONDAY!
Heh heh. Yes, tis true. Bright and early I am accompanying producer Tami on a bilingual bands shoot. This will be my first experience on an MTV News shoot, being that I work for the digital side. It will be an interesting experience working on a project from both realms - the on air & the digital.
Stay tuned for many updates on this because A) I love bilingual bands, B) I pitched the show idea, and C) I plan on promoting the crap out of it. I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
I am so excited about Joost!
I was given beta access early this morning, and since then have played around in it here and there…
My initial impressions are that the interface is really easy to use. I loved being able to search for video by keywords, being able to chat with friends while watching, and the video quality is awesome. I love the idea of being able to watch whatever I want, on demand, on any screen.
I plan on exploring it more later tonight (I am working, after all), but I thought I would share screenshots that I made on my lunch break:

… Chris Webber is from my hometown. My mom loves The Sacramento Kings. So, here’s a link to the Chris Webber news package my coworker Monty produced and that I built for the Overdrive News channel. “The Pistons star talks about his African-American artifacts, how hip-hop influenced his game and what he jams to in the locker room.”
There you go mom, go crazy.
Some links I clicked today (well, this morning)
MTV and NPR adapt to changing demographics - The MTV wigitizing/joost collab/embed decisions are not news to me, but I found the contrast with NPR’s changes interesting.
Viacom Turns on YouTube, now Greets Joost with Open Arms - In case you didn’t know.
surveillance infrastructure - MySpace using content-recognition software
Excerpt - “As media companies struggle to reclaim control over their movies, television shows and music in a world of online file-sharing software, they have found an ally in software of another kind. The new technological weapon is content-recognition software, which makes it possible to identify copyrighted material, even, for example, from blurry video clips. The technology could address what the entertainment industry sees as one of its biggest problems — songs and videos being posted on the Web without permission.
Last week, Vance Ikezoye, the chief executive of Audible Magic in Los Gatos, Calif., demonstrated the technology by downloading a two-minute clip from YouTube and feeding it into his company’s new video-recognition system. The clip — drained of color, with dialogue dubbed in Chinese — appeared to have been recorded with a camcorder in a dark movie theater before it was uploaded to the Web, so the image quality was poor. Still, Mr. Ikezoye’s filtering software quickly identified it as the sword-training scene that begins 49 minutes and 37 seconds into the Miramax film “Kill Bill: Vol. 2.””
Why I am Tired and Sick
I had a three day weekend like most of you, but I spent the entire time working on my short film. These last three days have been my least favorite part of the whole experience, because we are now dealing with the audio. Oh god, I hate it! I can’t wait for it to be over. Important lesson - I do not have any talent at scoring. Good to know. Next time, I will put this in the hands of someone who actually knows what they are doing. I work with Rich Sancho at MTV, who besides being a rock star on the job is also a scoring genius in his spare time, so perhaps next time I will ask him for assistance in this area. …Because I think it’s pretty clear at this point that I really suck at it.
Title update - It is no longer called “Lily’s Evening”. The new title is “Proximity”. I will have a youtube link up either tonight or tomorrow, so stay tuned.
I was so stressed out this weekend I somehow became sick from the stress, and now I have a runny nose and a ginormous head ache. I also got in an argument with my creative partner on this project and stormed out last night. *sigh* I am such a drama queen.
However, Proximity will be finished this week, and despite this minor obstacle I have really enjoyed the process. I hadn’t made a short film in two years so this was a long time coming. I am still submitting it to The Lot, I mean I know it’s past the deadline but hey - I have seen some of the submissions on their website… I think in comparision Jennifer and I have a fairly good shot.
What needs to Happen… soon.
It’s very difficult to find that healthy, delicate balance between work, your creative projects, time with friends, general personal upkeep/chores, and maintaining your sanity.
After I am done with this short film I am going to take the time to sit down and prioritize the gajillion things I need and want to do.
